No problem...after awhile you might run into that "AI Diabled" message on the screen but all you have to do it hit ESC to pause and type AI_DISABLE 0 into the console to enable it again... I was with you, about ready to toss the DVD...then I read for 20 hours on the forums and finally got it-I don't wish that on anyone..not fun. |

It will say that if it can't talk to the steam software. You are running steam right? And you're all logged into steam (although, offline) and the steam icon is sitting in the tray? Because when you run it without steam, that is what happens, you get part way through that cut-scene and then it chokes. Double check you followed every step of that tutorial...I've logged probably twenty hours in the game using the tutorial method and it has worked fine, as it has for another person I've been talking with...if that still doesn't work, let me know. |

Hey Kosmos i need some help. Spent 3 days getting the Iso and finally got it. Having the same problem as nickc711. I followed everything to a 'T'. The only thing is I am using a preexisting steam account with Counterstrike installed. I don't think that would have any effect on it but i could be wrong.
I get an error usually as soon as the first cutscene ends saying it can't communicate with the steam server to download necessary game files. If i alt-tab back into the game it lets me play about another minute before kicking me off for good saying it can't "read" some long memory string and the program needs to close. Any assistance in this matter would be appreciated. Thanks a lot. |

Hi, lets make a torrent for a f**king 2k text file. Here it is everyone. Thanks for writing it
...but seriously. 2k?
____________________ BEGIN FILE ______________________
This is in regards to the DVD I found on bittorrent titled "Half.Life.2.PC..WwW.DivX-Es.CoM.ISO"
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
How to make this damn thing play! I finally got it..here's what you do...
1) Install steam from "http://steampowered.com/download/SteamInstall.exe"
-Steam is a free piece of software from Valve that they are using to distribute
games and stop piracy...normally HL2 needs this to run by checking your game
with Valve's servers and such...we get around it, but you still need to install it.
2) Create a free steam account and log into your installed version of steam...play around for a minute
...make sure your logged in, and make sure it IS remembering your password and login info
or later you won't be able to enter offline mode which is key.
3) Close steam (right click in tray area and select exit.)
4) Disable your internet connection or firewall steam so it can't connect
5) Try starting steam, it should try to update, you can hit cancel. eventually you will get to a screen
that says it can't connect...click the button that says offline mode. If you can get into steam
in offline mode, your almost there. If you can't, make sure you told it to remember your user login
information, try letting it connect and remember to let it save your login info.
6) close steam again as in step 3 (we just needed to make sure you can get into offline mode)
7) copy the contents of the HL2 DVD you have to the folder:
D:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\User\Half-Life 2
You will have to create some of these folders, most likely, the "User" and "Half-Life 2" folders.
Copy the contents of the DVD into that folder.
Start steam in offline mode (Remember, NO internet connection, or firewall steam)
9) Close the main steam window but the tray icon will still be there which is what you want
10) Double click the file Launcher.exe that's in the HL2 folder you put everything in
C:\Program Files\Steam]SteamApps\User\Half-Life 2\Launcher.exe
11) HAVE FUN!!!!! 8^P
-Tutorial by KosMosUnit (www.twelveparsecs.com - try my AntiGravity game in the arcade...blows HL2 away! j/k) |

Hi mates,
I had the same initial problem and I also was about to put those 4GBs into trash when I found this forum thread. I followed all the instructions correctly. However, it does not work. the game starts like everything s okay, the cutscene with the scary man ends, the train stops, and thereabouts, the game stops and the popups appear! one says the connection to steam servers lost, when i click ok (which is inevitable) another one says the program tried to "read" an illegal memory location. when i click ok, all game windows go off. Is there something you can further recommend? Or the game has to go to the recycle bin? (I spent so much bandwidth to download it, and i still seed) |
